This Startup Says It Can Turn Your iPhone into a GoPro

You know what you can't do with a GoPro? Text your girlfriend. Or call in a takeout order. Or Google Tom Brady's stat line from last game. But the iPhone 6/6s already has an advanced camera. In fact, it's probably the feature that keeps getting better with each new update. So instead of buying a separate camera for that upcoming trip to Bora Bora, wouldn't it be awesome if your phone could do that heavy lifting for you? That's the premise behind the ProShot case, a waterproof, shock-proof iPhone case now live on Kickstarter that protects your phone down to 90 feet and can be mounted on myriad surfaces, from your surfboard to your car's dash, your bike handlebars to smack in the middle of your chest. “I was frustrated that I already had an amazing camera in my pocket, but I couldn’t use it in the places I wanted it most. We created a high quality, low-cost solution to this problem," said CEO and co-founder, Andrew Laird. The base model GoPro retails for $299.99, and is waterproof to 33 feet. At about the size of a marshmallow, its overall profile is smaller than that of your phone, but it requires buying and carrying an extra piece of hardware to achieve what, arguably, your phone can do for you already. It also requires purchasing an external screen if you want to see what you're filming or uploading footage before it can be viewed. The ProShot is angling toward a $25,000 Kickstarter goal, already approaching the $2,000 mark since launching at 9 a.m. Tuesday. Pledge goals vary: $75 gets you the early bird special of a case, a wide-angle-lense and a flat lense; for $129, backers will receive that and an extendable pole mount and chest mount. The ProShot case will retail for $99. What's more, founder Matt Andon and team – Andon and another founder live in Boston, with two other guys in NYC – have created an iPhone app to pair with the case, which converts the phone's volume buttons into camera controls so it can be operated without the use of the touch screen. (There are actually two cases, or lids, here: one is the Touch Screen Lid, which is waterproof to six feet, the other is the Deep Dive Lid, waterproof to 90 feet.) “GoPro has already proven that the market for adventure sports cameras is enormous. At the same time, we’re increasingly connected to our phones. We think there’s a real demand for a product that can connect those two worlds," said Laird. The Kickstarter campaign ends in 29 days.
