If you're clamoring for more ways to celebrate the release of the Star Trek Beyond trailer, a Boston startup has just the thing: a set of Star Trek social stickers that were just released through its mobile app, emojiTap."Star Trek fans around the world can now transport their texting discussions to another universe from emojiTap."[/pullquote]
The startup, Bare Tree Media, said Monday that the stickers feature the crew from Star Trek's original series, including William Shatner as Captain James T. Kirk and the late Leonard Nimoy as Spock. If you've only seen the newest movies—and if that is the case, shame on you—just think of them as older, alternative-universe versions of the characters.
The Star Trek stickers, obtained through a license with CBS Interactive, can be downloaded for free through emojiTap, a free app that was co-developed by Bare Tree Media and Brisk Mobile. The stickers can be used while texting in Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, WeChat and other popular messaging services.
"We are excited to offer Star Trek fans our series of Star Trek themed social stickers," Robert Ferrari, CEO of Bare Tree Media, said in a statement. "Star Trek fans around the world can now transport their texting discussions to another universe from emojiTap."
Bare Tree Media was founded in 2011 by Ferrari, who had previously served as VP of business development for Needham, Mass.-based video game developer Turbine, according to Ferrari's LinkedIn page. The startup was part of Providence startup accelerator Betaspring's spring 2013 and received $20,000 from the accelerator as part of its participation. The startup also participated in the Start Tank Boston accelerator program.
Bare Tree Media isn't the only Boston tech company that's working with the Star Trek license: Game developer Disruptor Beam is currently working on a mobile game called Star Trek Timelines.
Correction: A previous version of this story incorrectly referred to the stickers as emojis. As a Millennial, I should have known better.
