A new social media app named "Peach" was launched in the app store Friday, and is generating buzz online as users attempt to figure out exactly what it is.
At first glance, the app is a sort of free-form platform that includes aspects from Twitter and Snapchat, but also features integration features similar to Slack, such as the ability to search and post from a library of GIF files. Other functionality includes the option to post your "movement," or the data collected from your phone's health and fitness tracker to show how far you have walked that day, option to post the song that is currently playing on your device and a free form drawing feature similar to that in Snapchat.
In its app store description, Peach bills itself as "a refreshingly fun and simple way to keep up with friends and be yourself. Share tiny updates as you go through your day," it continues. "Posting is as easy as texting—with a twist. Some words are 'Magic Words' that give you quick access to fun and insightful things to share."
Through a preliminary test run in Peach, it seems the platform still has a number of bugs. According to an article in TechCrunch, Peach was created by Dom Hofmann, the founder of Vine.
While the idea of the platform seems to be to capitalize on an ever-shrinking attention span by making updates as consumable as possible, it's unclear whether it will be a successful experiment in new social platforms. Social media platforms like Ello and Snapchat are often seen as refreshingly different at first look, but can take off in popularity like Snapchat, or flounder and fail to live up to the hype, like Ello.
