Cambridge-based Hopper has been named as one of Apple's best apps of 2015, ranking it among the likes of Instagram, HBO Now and Twitter's Periscope. The app was ranked No. 7 on Apple's Top 25 Apps of 2015 list, which was vetted by Apple's staff. This makes Hopper the best travel app of this year, according to Apple."We debated. We argued. Everyone had favorites, but to make this of 2015's finest, there could be no doubts," Apple wrote. "What you see here made the cut—they're the most visionary, inventive, and irresistible apps and games of the year."
Hopper, which is also available on Android, alerts users when they can book the cheapest flights using data-driven research. The startup claims it can predict future flight prices with 95 percent accuracy. Between iPhone and Android, the app has been downloaded more than 1.5 million times, and it has saved users a total of $30 million on airfare, according to the startup.
Hopper was founded in 2008 originally a a service to help users find new travel destinations, but it pivoted into its current iteration last year before launching the app in January 2015. The startup has raised $22 million in funding from several investors, including Atlas Venture and Brightspark Ventures. Its founders are Frederic Lalonde, Joost Ouwerkerk and Sebastien Rainville. We recently called Hopper one of Boston's travel tech companies to watch.
